AURORA, COLO. — The Cherry Creek School District has begun construction on its new 58,000 square foot Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Center that is scheduled to open August 2011.

Enter the district’s innovative STEM program which curriculum targets sixth through 12th graders placing an emphasis on science and mathematics skills.

In November 2008, Cherry Creek District voters approved ballot issue 3B, which provides the district with $203.5 million in bonds to renovate existing schools and construct new ones.

The STEM Center will be located between Prairie Middle School and Overland High School, and the estimated construction cost is in the neighborhood of around $14 million – ground breaking began last month.

“We are very grateful that the community recognized the need to provide resources to continue our mission of excellence for all students,” said Board of Education President Aagje Barber.

Participating students will take Prairie and Overland courses simultaneously with STEM courses. STEM will provide its students with an emphasis on technical writing that is considered important in many technological and medical careers. Aviation courses may also be made available to students.

“We wanted to revitalize the North area of the Cherry Creek School District,” says a source close to the school district.

When the school opens next fall, the projected freshman enrollment will be 615 students. The STEM program may also be able to offer dual-credit courses with nearby colleges and universities, which would enable students to earn college credit while they are still attending high school.
