Rapper's Delight: Odd Future Show in Boulder's Fox Theatre

BOULDER, Colo. — A group of friends from Los Angeles took their dream and made it a reality by creating an edgy and controversial hip-hop group named Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA).

The year was 2007.

All the members of OFWGKTA have made group albums, and the groups inside the group, have made albums together. The group owes their fame to their frontman Tyler, “The Creator,” and his self-produced and directed video “Yonkers.” The hard-hitting video has received a lot of positive feedback, because of its outrageous lyrics, and a lot of negative feedback, because many fans believe Tyler is homophobic.

“I’m not homophobic,” Tyler says. “I use the word ‘gay’ as stupid. “You don’t see me getting mad when people use the “N” word.”

If the things Tyler says in his songs, or does in his videos offends people, the same amount of people seem to be enjoying it. During a recent Boulder show, Tyler explained that since the group has started touring, there has only been two shows they haven’t sold out.

To underline the point, Tyler received Best New Artist for his video “Yonkers” at the MTV Video Music Awards winning over such big name artists as Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and Kreayshawn.

Tyler isn’t the only successful member of OFWGKTA. Members Hodgy Beats and Left Brain have produced their own group called MellowHype, and have released two albums. The most successful was the re-release of their album BlackenedWhite, that reached the 81st spot on Billboard’s Top 200.

The most anticipated artist from OFWGKTA has to be Earl Sweatshirt, because of his absence from the Boulder show. Earl is arguably the best rapper in the group due to his great wordplay. Since he’s 17 years old, Earl’s mother doesn’t agree with the dark lyrics he produces in his music. Rumors say, she has removed Earl from the group.

Other OFWGKTA rappers, Mike G and Domo Genesis have together produced their own albums that were released for free on the group’s website. And finally rapper Frank Ocean was signed to OFWGKTA shortly after the release of Tyler’s album Goblin last summer.

For the future we can expect a lot bigger things from the members of OFWGKTA. In 2012 MellowHype is making their third album which will be called Numbers. Tyler’s most anticipated work, because of the success of Goblin , will be released sometime in 2012 as well. The album is called Wolf.

As for the rest of the group, a TV show is in the works to be produced by the makers of Jackass that will be a similar show, but with more skits, and music by OFWGKTA.

I like that you give a lot of details about the group’s individual projects and their successes, but I would like more background about the group before diving in.

Ditto with Nikko. You just sort of list these guys off as up and coming artists but provide for us no reason to be particularly interested in them. Also as someone pretty familiar with the guys, you totally breezed over how much controversy these dudes have created. Tyler got the attention of organizations as big as GLAAD in condemnation of their lyrics, and New Zealand just recently banned them from one of their single biggest music festivals. There’s more story here.

I thought it was a good story. Everybody is trying to make their mark in the world, and a story like this shows that anybody is capable of making such a mark.

I agree with Kevin. This article is perfect for inspiring hope in the lesser known artists. It was a great review of the band itself. Nice quotes. This would be perfect for any music publication too.

Good article. I haven’t heard of these guys before, but you shine a nice light on them. They definitely seem worth a listen. Maybe toss some details from the show in there to paint a bigger picture of who they are. It’s a nice photo, but I’m curious what these guys look like.
